Happy autumn equinox. 🍁🍂🍁

It’s a season of transition here in the north country, of letting go of the long warm sunny days to much shorter cooler days and nights.

The lack of sun and daylight has not always been easy for me. I’m a child born in and of the the summer. It’s always been when I felt the best.

The last several years since I discovered botanical printing it’s been easier to let go of summer and make the transition to fall.
The act of collecting leaves and imparting them on fabric gives me an opportunity to be grateful for what nature has given.

To everything there is a season.

I had the most beautiful and magical evening with my daughter @am_______hope on her birthday at Black Falls Farm in Montgomery @greenseedherbals rose alchemy workshop.

We made rose hydrosol and a rose elixir. We also were able to bring home a solid rose perfume!

My heart is full!❤️🌹❤️

March

Is a long month for me here in the NE. Though a native northerner the lack of sunshine is really hard.

I started out the month doing a natural dye class with the UVM Ethnobotany students. It was the second year doing the workshop for them. I really enjoy my time working with plant students. We used Madder root, Logwood and onion skins. They asked me back at the end of April to do another department wide natural dye workshop.

Along with finishing up some sewing projects I have been working on ‘laking’ old dye bathes. The process of reclaiming unused dyes into pigments to use for more projects.

Got to take a week break at the end of March from the unpredictable March weather here. It was sunny and warm, a real reprieve from the gray skies here in the NE. I was able to wear some of my new summer makes while away.

April’s focus will be on starting dye plant seeds. My plan is to grow a significant amount more Japanese indigo both at home and in my dye garden at @arcanagardens to use for more Japanese indigo projects and to dry with possibly using in the future for experimenting with small batch Sukumo making, the Japanese method for fermenting Japanese indigo to use in indigo vats.

I’ll be sending more time this year working on new techniques to use for new projects.

I plan on doing a few workshops this season. I’m open to doing some private lessons. DM me with any requests or questions.

Happy Spring! The days are growing longer and signs of spring are emerging.
